Manual Transmission Cooler?

I was under the car last night adjusting some wiring for my wide band oxygen sensor. I had let the car sit for a good hour after coming home to let things cool down.

Well while wrenching on the sensor, I touched the transmission and found it quite hot. So that got me thinking that perhaps a cooler for the transmission oil on the 5 speed might be in order.

How hot can a manual transmission get, and when do you typically think about cooling one? I wonder if I should consider some heat shields on the exhaust tubes that run along the trans? Could the exhaust be adding considerable heat into the trans case and thus the fluid?
