I just recently bought a couple transmissions to replace the one I ruined 1st gear on. My 89 bird has a sensor/switch on the tranny that the 2 I bought do not have. This switch is called, the "fifth gear position" switch. I have attached a couple pictures, 1st of my original tranny, 2nd of my new one which must come out of a newer SC.

What does this switch do and am I hurting anything by not having a sensor there?

Chris

oh its a 5-speed btw.

The only thing that comes to mind is for no upshift light in fifth gear??

most explanations i've heard involve cruise control. thing is i swapped my 89 which had the sensor , for a 92 which doesn't and my cruise worked all the way to the shootout and back.

Anybody know what this thing is for? I would guess that when the car is shifted into fifth, this sensor is grounded. I would assume whatever its function is, was done a different way on the later model cars.

The function is not important so don't worry about it.

Read this thread... (http://www.sccoa.com/forums/showthread.php?t=96384&highlight=start+neutral) [neutral safety switch...not to be confused with the clutch pedal safety switch...]

according to my factory 89 shop manual, the neutral safety switch or "switch-neutral sensing" as my book tells it 16-20-4, that switch is the one on the tail housing just rear of the shifter. The red switch from my pictures is for the back-up lights.

Whatever that other switch is for, I have not been able to figure it out. Car runs fine without that one plugged in, so driveability is not an issue which was predictable. I cannot start the car without the clutch being in either, which is normal and a safety issue.

That makes three switches on your original trans, then, and with these being Mazda units, your unknown switch might be specific to those models.

In any case, as dave said, it sounds like you're covered...

Your right, maybe mazda has a function that involves the fifth gear position switch like an overdrive light or something on their cars that ford never used.
