Strange clicking noise when releasing brakes

Hello! I have an 89 XR/7. I recently had new brake pads (front and
rear) and the rotors turned, and the system bled and flushed.
Ever since then, I hear a clicking noise when I press or release the brakes.
It comes from the front and the rear, a little like a tick/tock noise. They
feel a little strange too. What could this be?

Probably unrelated, I also had the turn signal switch replaced. Now the
headlights don't work right. My car has the autolamp system and
now it is not working right. The mechanic found out that there is a
different turn signal switch and they got the wrong one for my car.
The headlights work, but when I want to turn on the brights, the low beams
don't turn off. Also, the autolamp system thinks it is turning the brights off.
Lots of problems with this new part.

Thanks,

Tom W.

if you didn't do the brakes yourself then take it back otherwise...

take the front wheels off, or whichever ones are making noise, and have someone step on the pedal while watch the caliper work, kinda hard to tell you what it is exactly without it in front of me but its probably something simple.

You have the wrong MFS installed.....

The part # on the part you are looking for starts with: CAD and has a blue module on the back of the switch......

The part # you have right now is more than likely: BAD and has a green module on the back of the switch....

Do you still have your original MFS....

Strange clicking noise when releasing brake

Just as a followup, the clicking noise happens either in drive or in park. I notice it
especially when applying the brakes slowly. A little click followed immediately by
a slightly different click. Does this ring any bells?

Also, I don't have the original turn signal switch anymore.

Thanks,

Tom W.

I have a MFS with the part # AAD.....

It is a blue module that came from an LX model.....

I tested it on my SC and it seemed to work perfectly....

(Foot brake, right...? Not parking brake...)

Here is a list of what you can suspect:
  • Wrong parts
  • Wrong assembly

It sounds to me like the anti-rattle springs/clips (inside the caliper, contacting each brake pad at the top) were either left out or not installed correctly. On occasion, some people bend them taking them off and don't realize they no longer function correctly when reinstalled.

In any case, I would agree with the previous recommendation to take it back to whomever did the work. Let them ride with you long enough to hear the noise and then make sure they check it out.

It is the foot brake. Haven't tried the hand brake recently. The clicking noise
sounds a like it is coming from closer than the wheels, somehow. Could it be a relay?

The mechanic got the VIN # from my Cougar and had the parts shop look the turn
signal switch up. They gave him the wrong part. He has the new one on order

Thanks,

Tom W.
