package tray removal

i was thinking about removing the package tray under the rear dash. the irc computer is not being used (previous owner replace tokicos with regular bilsteens), but the abs computer and factory amp is still in use. i would like to remove the tray and remount the abs and amp so that i can push my speaker box all the way to the back of the seat and regain some useful trunk space that i can not get to behind the speaker box i have. i need some thoughts and ideas as to where and how to remount the abs comp. and amp. i know there has to be some of ya'll out there that has done it. thanks in advance for any help.

I managed to find a 12" tall sub box that would just fit under the tray and still slide up close against the back of the seat - this is with a 10" woofer, however.

The third photo shows a finished trim panel attached to the top of the sub box that helps to hide the factory shelf, etc.

You might consider mounting the two components on the side(s) of the new woofer box once it is installed, perhaps avoiding having to rewire, etc. Maybe locate them on the front of the box instead... I would be cautious over heat and EMI, if anything, when it came to choosing new locations. Note that if someone breaks in and manages to snag your sub box, anything attached to it might go as well, so plan ahead.

the fact is i have 2 12's, and the box is about and 1 1/2" too tall. i could change the box, but i am not wanting to put out any money.

Id try to tuck it under if possible. I made my box to tuck but I did sacrafice cubic feet of air space. My subs requred 1cf of space im at .75. With a smaller inclosure it actually ups the powerhandeling of the subs a bit when compared to a extra large box. So, going a bit small really isnt going to hurt much. Mine is similar to Ken's, only twins:p

Sweet ;) Those fit nice... I've been eyeing a dual box - wonder if my amp could power a pair of 10's.

You should try the trim panel along the top...easy to add, with a nice subtle custom look when done.

thanx for the links KMT. that helps out some. i found a down firing box that will fit the 2 12's and slide under the tray for $100. might give it a shot.
let yall know if it works and put up pics.

i dont think a factory box would be the way to go. you would be far better off building one. for example if your speaker needs 2cuft but some factory box you get is only 1.56cuft then its not going to sound its best and could cause speaker damage. take LxWxH divided by 1728. that will tell you the cuft. dont forget to factor in your displacement for the sub and port if ported. gl and hope it all works out for you. :)

Anybody know what the air space for Fosgate HX2's require? I have 2 of them in a box that "fit" in the trunk, but it hits the tray as well. I am going to just build by own box, but would like to know what size I need to build it to. You can build your own box for far less than $100. If you only have 1 10" speaker, grab a half sheet of HDF and beg borrow or steal a saw and go for it. Really not hard at all. May only cost $25 or so.

Found it on the Fosgate website, imagine that. They recommend 1.2cf. I'm at about 2.9 without the speakers with my current box. So I should have no problems getting a box to fit in the Tbird and keeping the sound the same. Thanks for the help.

Nice find, but thats for a ported box, which I wont use.
# sealed box volume 0.8-4.0 cubic feet
# ported box volume 1.75-4.0 cubic feet
It also list the Q logic boxes, which is what i have now. Its just a little to tall. If I shortend it by about 2" it would go all the way to the back of the seats. I just never cared for pre made boxes. I had it laying around, so I used it. For awhile I used just 1 Audiobahn DVC 12" and it was fine, just wanted more. I had these laying around from an old swap out I did for my brother, so I used them.
