View Full Version : Some Oil Questions (burning or losing)

A few weeks ago I replaced the snout on my supercharger. When I removed the supercharger, I noticed a lot of oil (fresh unburnt but worn) under the supercharger on top of the intake manifold. It was motor oil, not SC oil. Also a few days ago, one of my cats got plugged and I drove around like that for a few days it started to rattle so I had them both removed. A few weeks back my oil pressure gauge sat lower than usual (on "o"), but then went back to where it usually sits (on the "m").

Now today, I got the low oil light on the VMM and the oil pressure gauge once again sat lower than usual (in between "n" and "o". I was under the car looking for the knock sensor and moved the wires on the sensor in the oil pan a bit so I don't know if I might have messed it up; I doubt it. I checked the oil and it was low. Now my question are these:

Would the clogged cat cause the car to throw out oil from somewhere or perhaps burn it? If I have an oil leak under the SC but above the intake manifold, what could be possibly leaking? Could messing around with the wire possibly cause the low oil light?

1.The oil pressure guage is not much more than a voltmeter (its a glorified idiot light) unless you have changed the sending unit and jumped the one resistor behind the dash so you can only really count on this guage to tell you if there is oil pressure or not...no good for telling how much oil pressure.

2.As far as the low oil light, mine can be really picky. If I park with the nose uphill I will usually have a low oil light even if it is only <1/4 quart low. Were you in your normal spot?

3.As far as the oil on the intake, is it possible that it came from the valve covers? They are notorious for coming loose and slinging oil to the four winds. More often they drop it on the ex. manifolds and the give away is the burning oil smell but anything is possible.

I hope some of this can be of some help, if not consider it a long winded ttt.

Ya know Anthony, I WAS going up the ramp part of a lift to check on an exhaust leak so maybe thats what it was. The oil that was on top of the intake manifold is a real mistery though, the engine is a new rebuild and all the gaskets are brand spanking new. Not only that but when Mike and I saw all the oil, there were no tell tale signs of an oil leak ANYWHERE. Oh well, I shall keep looking.

Also, the oil pressure gauge goes from "m" on norm to the "n" on norm and back. It's weird, I started the car today and it was on "n" then it warmed up and it was on "m" then on my drive to work back to "n" then back to "m." To my knowledge, it has not been changed from the original one and the people who have worked on it were only engine builders, not electricians. Maybe the sending unit is going south *shruggs shoulders*

SC ya later!

My pressure "guage" varies a bit too. I believe it to be either volt or amp (not sure which) dependent. How's it looking for this weekend?

I'll be there, wether or not I will run depends on my ability to get a fuel pump and shift kit in. If not, it looks like I will be camera boy! Also, maybe I can borrow an EZ up.
