Not really familiar with audio systems at all, much less car audio. However the stock (89 SC) audio system is "okay" with me,
but on higher volume it makes horrible clappy/snappy sounds which makes it unbearable to listen to.

The sound seems to originate from the rear speakers, haven't looked into it much more than that.

Is there a simple fix to this or am I looking at a new audio system if I wish to get rid of the issue?

I would suspect the speakers themselves are bad. The paper cones have probably deteriorated and the voice coils may have separated from the cone or are rubbing on the housing at high volume levels.

Sounds like your subwoofer surround is gone.
I have one i replaced with an alpine 6.3/4 midbass driver.
Pm me if interested

Yep, check the subwoofer speaker cone. Deterioration of the foam surround is a big problem with them.
