is the tbird 4.6 V-8 the same as the ones in the mustangs?

Yes, the engine is of the same design as the 1996-1998 Mustang 4.6L. To be more specific, the 4.6L used in 96-97 MN12s is exactly the same as the 96-98 Mustang 4.6L, but the 94-95 4.6L used in the MN12 uses different heads and a different all-aluminum intake manifold.
