exhaust from stock manifolds to just beyond center muffler

I've gone through this before...but it's confusing so I thought I'd solicit help.

I don't want to spend a fortune on the complete exhaust system from manifolds back...and my experience has been that the stock cats plus the stock center muffler are the real culprits.

What's the cheapest way (and who to buy from) a connection from the stock manifolds to high flow cats, through a better center muffler (I've used the SCCOA, that's OK) and then connect to the stock exhaust from that point? (with the least amount of aggravation)

What I did

On my 89 sc I went to a muffler shop and had two 2 1/4 pipes into a 3 inch cat then to the stock back half of exhaust. Wasnt really raspy and I noticed a power increase..Cheapest way out in my opinion

That's interesting....and you say there is no obnoxious resonance?

How exactly did you "Y pipe" into the cat....and is that cat commercially available?

If this works, I guess the cat is acting as a resonator after the Y which somehow allows it to act as a resonator?
