... did you make sure the pin lines up with the slot for the plastic slider in the steering column before installing it ???

yes, i know have a picture but the only logical spot the pin goes in yes. was there a way the part itself and the pin were suppose to line up in particular like from a certain starting position? this thing is a pain to take in and out because of the space/torx bits so i'd like to get it right this time around...lol

whats the part number for the switch , maybe you got the wrong one from the parts dealer . it has happened to me before, i would cross reference part numbers to be safe ...

just looked it up on advanced auto, part number is correct

You have to have the key in the switch and the switch turned to run before removing the old switch.....

They are not that hard to swap out.....

I use a " wrench to drive the torx bit for that hard to get to front bolt.....

The other bolt is even easier to remove.....

run as in post ignition when the key slaps back?

That would be correct.....

Do not move the switch to start.....

It won't stay there anyway.....;)

Try turning your headlight knob and see if that helps....

i tried turning it both ways nothing works. i thought maybe i did that when i thought taking part of my dash off would help getting to those bolts, but nope...my sc just hates me! i'm gonna tease it and yell at it and tell it i'm trading it for something turbo or 4 cylinder...maybe it will stop acting up (eventhough i don't wanna!)

If you have the Ignition switch un-bolted from the column .. does it work normally - If you manually slide the pin to the Accessory, Run or Start positions ??

Agreed. You need to take the electrical switch out first to verify if you have another mechanical problem in the column. Try getting under there and see if you can see the slot move when you turn the key. That will verify if the linkage is broken or not. Then move the pin on the electrical switch and see if the electrics work right. (Please be careful, as the wires are live and those are big wires with big juice!!!)

the pin moves when you turn the key yes, if that is what you mean.

Do any of the other interior lights stay on, or only the dome light....

When my SC starts acting up, I park it next to one of my heavily parted parts cars and tell her, "This could be you in the near future."

Works every time.....:D

So your dome light stays on, but everything else is always off. Could you have a problem at the fuse box under the hood? Maybe there is a short there and it popped a fuse. Did you check any fuses? Also, there are two wiring spots that seem to give a lot of trouble: the splice next to the driver's seat (in the floor channel) and the underhood light connectors.

How cruel. :D

Was the dome light problem before the switch install, or only afterwards?

this just in...i'm a huge ~~~~~~~ and i didn't turn that light knob all the way...eric is winning so far. as far as the ignition goes..i'm completely lost. are those two wiring areas at fault for the ignition perhaps? or was that directed to the dome lights? all of the fuses are completely fine also. i also reinstalled the old ignition and it does not work either? i have to be just making a big mistake somewhere..

thanks for all the responses also!

You're doing fine - probably just a little thing left to figure out - don't give up! Would pictures of anything help?

I had the same thing happen to me in my younger years....:o

I had my car worked on by the dealership and when I got home, I noticed the dome light wouldn't go off....

After messing with the headlight knob, I took it back to the dealer and they fixed it by turning the knob a little more until it clicked and the dome light went off......

Hey, that's good. At least the dome light is fixed! (Don't feel bad, I just did plugs and wires and somehow forgot which bank is 1-2-3...)

About the ignition - here's my question. You reinstalled the old switch and the electrical stuff still doesn't work. Is that with the switch in the column, or did you hold the switch away from the column and work the pin? That's what I want to know ... if the car will run with the pin manually activated, then the problem is not in the switch, but maybe in the lock tumbler. If it does not work with the switch manually activated, then it's almost certainly a wiring problem.

It is probably going to be something simple that you are overlooking....

In high school, a long long time ago, I did a tune up on my 289....

I got the #7 and #8 plug wires switched and the engine was running pretty bad....

I figured I could switch the two wires while the engine was running.....

Without thinking about the consequences, I grabbed the #8 plug wire....

All my buddies LTAO as I got lit up....

the car won't run at all. i have tried to reinstall the ignition switch multiple times (old and new) with the pin in the correct position and nothing...i would also assume a wiring problem at this point too. however, before i took out the old switch, i could at least key on the electric, the car just wouldn't start. that's why i was swapping them in the first place. i'm lost now, what would be some key wiring points to look at?

no pictures either, no digital camera...

I'm sorry, maybe I'm really being dense. I just don't see a direct answer to my question. Did you move the pin by hand and try to start the car? Because I want to know if the car starts with the switch plugged in, but NOT installed to the column.

LOL .. I asked the same thing but it only seems he is trying it while installed on the column ... IDK.

look there is a big connector a little lower from the switch on the column just remove the steering trim youll see it. when i put my sc back on the road this summer many thing were not working like power brake light flasher etc... this big connector was half disconnected fixed it with tiwrap. maybe your is more disconnected and the car wont start. i just say maybe! maybe!!!

This might sound stupid, but have you checked the safety switch on the clutch pedal that tells the computer to start the engine only when the clutch pedal is pushed in.....

johnrada

i have not checked the safety switch on the clutch pedal, but i also know its broken because i don't need to push it in prior to this. i will check the harness you are talking about and yes i have tried without installing it...
