Transmission Fluid

I would just stick with mercon III, i bet the tranny would slip real bad if you went to a syntheic at this point.

At 130 thou my bet is that the majority of the clutch material in the transmission is floating around in the fluid and when you change it you may be surprised to find the tranny has a problem or two thats being masked by the old tainted fluid. It wouldn't be the first time thats happened. I hope I'm wrong this time---On automatics, especially old automatics, unless I'm doing a rebuild or upgrade, "if it ain't broke" smile , and thats all.................Dan

This is a 5 Speed Manual that ginds a bit on all gears.... I was thinking it couldn't hurt and if it sucks more I know that its got to be fixed asap... It sticks a little on the clutch as well.

I used MaxLife Mercon V in my AOD with 100k. MaxLife ATF is full synthetic. It still shifts flawlessly, the MaxLife actually makes it feel better. Synthetics are definitely worth it in the transmission and differential.

Amsoil synchromesh

WhiteThunder, have you used this on your 1990 5speed SC and if so how does the shifts feel.

Thanks,
Brando

Brando,

My tranny fluid was changed when I changed the clutch. It was after that I found out I was supposed to add a friction modifier to the ATF. Some SCCoA members recommended Pennzoil Syncromesh, but I couldn't find it locally. I found the Amzoil product locally and used it.

Doesn't seem to shift any differently than before. But then I didn't have any problems shifting before switching to Amzoil.

Different car, but I put the last of the Mobil 1 ATF I had in my Escort 5 speed stick beater when I did a seal on it. It shifted smoother after and seemed to go into gear a little bit easier...
