Do I need a special tool to remove this radio?

Looks like that faceplate comes off or, just the outside bezel.

What happens is a metal shell is attached to the head unit, and then slid into the cavity.

Once in place, there are either flanges that snap into place, which will require the Ford style radio removal tools...

(a pair of large u-shaped rods with a notch or wedge on each end), or thin tangs that are bent out to lock it in.

(When inserting the tools, you should feel a spot where the notched ends have catch into a slight indentation. Push the outside loop ends of the tools outward (left/right) while simultaneously pulling the radio forward, away from the dash)

There may be a brace on the back, but given the limited amount of space in there, I doubt it.

Remove the face plate/bezel and use a flashlight to look closely around each side... If you see a pair of holes on each front corner, use the Ford removal tools. If you see metal tangs/tabs along the front sides, use a thin screwdriver or flat probe to gently bend them back inward, towards the radio body and slowly work it out.

In some cases, the head unit is fastened to the metal sleeve/shell with tiny screws on the face, behind the bezel. If that is the case, remove them and the head unit and you can leave the metal sleeve/shell in place if you like.

Once it moves out an inch or so, there should be nothing more holding it besides wiring.
