View Full Version : Stalling Car and Poor Gas Mileage

After all the trouble I had with my car before, the crank broke on my way to work back in July. Because it was a reman engine from Jasper, it was replaced under warranty. However, I had always had a slight idle problem and once in a great while, the car would stall when suddenly stopping after driving on the highway.

Now that my replacement engine has been installed and it's had about 3,000 miles on it, it is idling fairly rough and stalling continuously when stopped. Naturally, the mechanics that installed the engine aren't specialists in SC and if I take the car back to them, they will probably replace several things and charge me their prices which isn't good. If they knew what they were doing, I'd have no problems with paying them.

I checked the MAF sensor and it "looks" clean. When I unplugged it, the car idles about the same. Does that mean it's good or bad? I just don't want to "guess" and spend money on a new one to find out that isn't the problem. Is there a trick to testing the sensor yourself? Can it be done?

I checked (as best as I can but I wear hearing aids) for vacuum leaks and couldn't hear anything abnormal.

Also, does a supercharger normally make a rapid ticking sound? Didn't notice that before but I didn't really pay much attention to it before.

The car doesn't seem to run as strong as it did before but it could just be in my head. My gas mileage has gone down to around 16 - 18 MPG though I drive mostly highway.

Any ideas? Sorry for all the questions; I'm not a mechanic but would like to be able to learn more about it and save some money doing most of the repairs myself.

Thanks for any help!

first thing check to make sure all the sensors are plugged in, keep in mind that with most shops these days its not that they dont know much about your car. its that they just dont know much of anything. typically they have about 3-5 workers, all but 1 are guys that just walked in off of the street and has no clue. law only requires that they have 1 qualified mechanic on sight. after checking the sensors pop your codes. if still nothing, check for vacuum leaks. if still nothing, check for pressure leaks through the entire sc system.

Thanks. I'll recheck these tomorrow.

Still having issues. Here's a video. Makes noise when accelerating but normal when idling. Suddenly stalls at the end.

Here's a link to another posting about this issue. If anyone else has suggestions, please respond. Thanks
