Rod question

I was changing out main and rod bearings in one of my SCs and I noticed that there were no numbers on the rods and caps (this is the second SC engine where I have seen this).....

In fact, there was a #3 stamped on one of the rods....

A buddy of mine was in the garage and I pointed this out to him....

This started a discussion on how Ford numbered the rods....

One of us said that they were sequentially numbered 1 & 2, 3 & 4, 5 & 6.....

The other said that they were numbered the same as the cylinders 1 & 4, 2 & 5, 3 & 6....

Which one of us is right.....

my rebuilt short block i purchased (had a tag with ford reman numbers on it glued to side of block) had three rods that had #3 on them. I just assumed that they were reconditioned rods so the builder grabed what ever and assembled the motor.

my original motor in the car when I took it down had no numbers at all on any rods, there were paint colors sprayed on each rod (orange and blue) right where the rod cap meets the actual rod... strange huh

Thanks for clearing that up.....

Saved me from tearing apart one of my spare engines.....
