i had the same issue with my 94.. none of the gas smell that i know of though.. turned out to be a faulty idle air control valve.

Really? You had to start the car with the pedal to the floor becuase your IACV was acting up on you? Would it idle like garbage after you got it started? Even when I give mine gas it doesn't run right, I would think even if the IACV is bad I should hear it run right when I give it gas, or am I wrong on that assumption?
 
Well just an update I found the problem. No compression in cylinder 6 :(

I suppose it's possible but I just replaced them less than 1000 miles ago. I always replace valve seals when I put a motor together but this time I didn't because I was told the heads were in good condition. My fault for not just replacing them anyway, no coolant in the oil thankfully.
 
Also, I'm hearing a big valve train noise around cylinder 6, what do you guys think could be going on?
