Fuel pump relay is intermitent although power is being supplied by the computer and there is no interuption in power from hot line. I've tested everything regarding my problem. I was just wondering if anyone can tell me
What is the purpose of the diode?
and what happens when it malfunctions?

I can say usually the purpose of a Diode (excepting light emitting diodes) is to restrict the flow of electric current to one direction. So in this case, it probably regulates the relay switch.
