Auto transmission temperature sending unit placement

It seems most people when installing a transmission temperature sensor adds it to the pan.

Ken Wagner's transmission came with the sending unit mounted on the side of the transmission near the transmission cooling lines.

Will this location get a good fluid temperature reading?

Is this an acceptable location or should he add a bung to the pan?

Hey Mike- I put mine in my pan, at the time (4-5yrs ago) the research I conducted stated that was the place that will give you the most accurate read. I'm sure you wont have a problem welding a bung in, but it took me a week and a half with calling about all the machine shops in dm before i could find a guy that'd do it..
