Is there a way to set the cam synchronizer w/o the tool?

Although I have not removed mine for the HG job, I would like to check it from the previous go round I had with replacing my timing cover gasket. After my timing cover replacement, I sort of eyeballed it in because I never moved the crank from its position before I removed the cover. My ran and ran pretty well till the HG's gave way, but I just want to check to make sure.

Tips?

Yup. Just turn the crankshaft until the balancer gap is lined up with the pointer. Turn the stalk until the tip of the cup lines up with the middle of the notch in the housing. The tip of the cup will also sit in the middle of the cam sensor's pickup. Tighten the retainer bolt, install the cam sensor and start the car. If it won't start or spits and sputters, set the balancer once again and realign the synchronizer stalk but 180 degrees out.
