Was heading up 264 to Miltary Hwy and kicked her in the butt to get over to get off....she went from 4th to 3rd. Loud bang and then into second. All I had was first and second after that. So, Im sure the direct drum is busted. Guess Im overhauling an AOD next weekend.....I was just glad I dodnt have to tow it off the highway.

Sorry to hear that. Glad you got it off the highway ok. I'm sure after you get on that tranny next weekend that problem will be taken care of.

Brings back memories. I killed the direct drum in the AODE in my Mustang. Seems the stock V6 trans did not care for the torque from the roots supercharger.
It sure was a pain driving from the Redmill area of VA Beach back to Chesapeake in 2nd gear.

Now I just have to fugure out what I did with all of the upgraded parts I bought 3-4 years ago. I know I bought a 7 clutch DD. Just gotta find it....and the other parts. Hardened input 2in band....etc. And buy an over haul kit....

That sucks but at least it did it locally and not on one of your road trips.

This car is a pristine example of a completely stock '90 auto, that in itself is the reason not to............;)

Im not an Auto Transmission professional. Never claimed to be. It was really the only thing I never did much of, car wise. But I can put one together if need be....

Update- I forgot to post that I was wrong about the broken part. It was the input shaft that broke. Not the direct drum. Decided to go ahead and add the 4r70w internals and only rebuild it once. Putting her back in this weekend. Took me a little longer since I decided to upgrade....

Did you also upgrade to a hardened direct drive input shaft ?

Ok, We now have all of the gears. Did some other needed maintanence. Flushed everything, fixed the rear end, she is like brand new again. Wide ratio kit in the transmission is def noticeable....

Dont laugh at my contraption. The tranny jack is broken. I was actually dreading installing the transmission like this, being spoiled in the past by 2500.00 Lincoln transmission jacks. Piece a cake though. Honestly took like 3 minutes to line it up. I guided while my buddy lowered the lift....lol

Atleast you have a lift. I have to raise the car as high as I can, take a wheel off so the trans will slide out from under car, get the motorcycle lift up under the car , lift trans onto moto lift then get bricks under the trans so the moto lift will get it high enough in the car. I can change the converter in 6 hours after I get the car in the air. but that doen't involve getting the trans off the lift.:(

That pic of the jack on the table is hilarious tho.:D

Yes, I have done it on my back like that. It does suck. Minus the moto lift. Lifts are life savers for sure. I had the trans in and the rear end pinion and carrier bearings done in under 2 hours. That was with taking the time to set up the TV pressure to 33psi with a guage block. Then I did the valve cover gaskets, though I should have just tightened them. The rear bolts were loose and causing the leak. Flushed cooling system, changed oil and Machined the front rotors and replaced the pads. I was there from 11am to 430pm. On the ground that would have been a 10hr job...Next up is replacing the A/C system and doing some interior work. Maybe one day I will put a real engine in this thing as well...
