ok on the 89 -93 series if you have a base bird you have the 80mph 3 gauge cluster right? If i took a 6 gauge cluster and plugged it in how would it react are the ribbon cables the same? would the tach work?

Well

I don't think the ribbons are the same. Reason is that the 89-93 and 94-95 clusters don't work together and thats SC to SC.

I do believe that the ribbons are made specific to each cluster.

Only way to truely tell is a schemetic to see what wire goes where.

The connectors are the same on several, but they're wired differently, so no, you can't just unplug/replug.

I'd grab a EVTM (Electrical Vacuum Troubleshooting Manual) for the year(s) you're interested in, and compare.

You can repin the connectors to make them work with the new instrument cluster.

Some clusters will require additional wiring, and maybe a new tune or program for the PCM (such as the all -digital or "Disco" dash. )
