I've searched for info on what's required to do this and how difficult it is.

I know its best to do with a lift to raise the car high enough; but are there any instructions/ how-to out there for exactly what to do and when to do it?

I've heard its quicker to do and i want to give it a try......
thanks in advance.

I dropped one with the engine supported by a crane. Just unhooked the upper ball joints, disconnected the steering knuckle, unhooked the ABS sensors, power steering lines and sub frame bolts. It's been a while so there might be a few more steps. We were able to bring it down on the jack without much trouble but it will wobble if not careful.

Above is only if you want to drop the subframe. Taking the engine with it would require a bit more of course, heater hoses, grounds etc...

Its rather simple to do pulling it out the top, not sure if you would save any time at all dropping out the bottom.
