Odometer

My speedometer works. My odometer doesn't. It quit about 300 miles, 1 week ago.

Is there a gear in the speedo that maybe broke?
Is there a reputable company that rebuilds these?
Can I rebuild it myself, or is my speedometer basiclly shot?

I'm glad the speedometer's working fine so far. But, if it's on it's way out, I'd like to get started fixing it before it becomes a bigger problem.

Yes there's a pair of gears that tend to fail.

Yes, it's fixable - my problem has been breaking the speedometer needle off when I try to take it apart (bad fine muscle control :(:(:( )

VDO made these for Ford, a walk-through on how to fix a Porsche model (almost identical mechanically!) is at http://www.p-car.com/diy/odometer/ , and the gears can be ordered from (among other places!) http://www.odometergears.com/ford.html

To reset the odometer to a closer reading, if you want to, how-to can be had at http://forums.tccoa.com/showthread.php?t=120376 (also with more specifics on how to take apart the Ford speedometer ).

It's a common failure...you can buy a new set of odometer gears from Super Coupe Performance and repair it yourself.
