It has come to my attention that the Z car is a piece of junk, and needs some work.

I wanted to pull this battery tray out to make room for a methanol setup... Apparently "They" decided the two mounting bolts weren't good enough, and welded the bastard on there!! I'll have to hit it with a grinder later...

This is what's called an Air Injection valve. Vacuum is supplied to the solenoid, and the valve allows fresh air to be sucked into the exhaust. These frequently back up with condensation, and make a very annoying girgling noise... Plus it takes up valuable space. Out it must go.

Thats kind of funny. For years I wore the work gloves, but whatever fluid you had on them soaked through into your skin anyway. So I started with the plastic/latex what have you and they of course rip on a lot of things in tight spaces. So, I latex up and put the work gloves over them. Keeps the latex from getting torn on a lot of things, and keeps your hands nice and clean.

P.S. I am still at a loss as to why this is occurring. Is it going to make the car faster?

When I build one of my cars, I disassemble it, and rebuild it with only the pieces I feel are necessary, and put them in the places I want them. Will it be faster? You're darn tootin. Will it be easier to work on? Hands down yes.

The Fastness of the car is dependant on money... And my health is cutting into that. I have to go to the cardiologists on Wednesday. I'm old :(

That is exactly what I do. Sometimes I wish I could design cars instead of the retarded people that do. You would be surprised at how much easer it is to work on things when you put cretin parts in the locations where they should have been put in the first place.

Days 6-8:

I cleaned everything off, and then grinded down as much rust as I could reach with my tools. Much more than this seemed to be ineffective
http://a1.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/395885_632603756965_212401823_33068235_144506351_n .jpg

Then I covered everything up with rubberized undercoating. There are a few spots that had solvent still on them that I had missed, and they are slowly drying. Should not hinder progress.

Front bumper cover removed. It's actually held on by 6 bolts in the center. Removal was surprisingly efficient. There is a subframe that's plastic welded to the side of it though :/

This is looking at the car from the passenger side, right under the headlight. The black shiny thing dead center is a duct for the stock airbox. It pulls air from right behind the intercoolers.... Smart.....

Hahaha Finally fixing that thing, eh? From what I saw last season, I'm going to need them. Power dropped off drastically at 4500rpm, and boost started to rise exponentially. I've got to keep all of the restrictions down I can.

Granted I would **Love** to have me some turbo action going on, It's just not cost effective at this point :/

01-31-2012, 04:03 PM
Well...we have known it iw going bad for what....2ish years? And now finally it decides to die? As long as it stays pretty cool outside, I think I can squeeze another week or two out of it (hopefully) as I am still fixing other things to make my second daily driver...drivable.

I called the dog last week and ordered a box of parts. You know that rebuild kits do not come with an OD band? Or a filter? I can see not coming with a converter and fluid. That is kind of a given, but to not have a filter added to it. That is the kind of thing you would expect to have. Good thing I was on the phone with him when I was. I ran up and checked my rebuild kit...and he was right.

Hmmm...lets see. I will add this pan gasket and....hmmm...Nope. Nothing else needed in this sealed unit.

Anyway, I am getting a flashing OD light all the time in 3rd, and some times in 2nd. So, the clutches are fried and it is pushing all the fluid into that pack to make the engaugement possible. So, I am babying it by holding first, and then letting it do the quick shift into 2 and 3 and then to OD while that still works.

As soon as the tranny parts get here, I will rebuild my spare (01) tranny and slip it in. Then, with the new tranny, marauder converter, shorties, 3" exhaust, and a bit of luck, this car will perform like it should have from the factory.

Now...back to your story. Are you removing anything from the rear? Or do you like the junk in the trunk?

SWS

Beware of Dog. The total parts cost for my transmission rebuild was around $270, and that was with stronger internals than were in the previous transmission build... "OEM Quality"

P.S. Needs more stall ;)

What's with the 3" exhaust? Running a single?

The junk in the trunk of the Z will probably remain untouched until I decide to do suspension work. There's not much back there anyway (Thank god)

Rebuild parts I already had. The stuff I am getting from him is all upgrades and a stock tail shaft housing and output. I wish I could afford more stall, but it is not in the cards now. The exhaust will be 2 1/2 to a single 3" out. You know me...performance prior to looks and what not.

How much weight are you taking off of the nose of the car? If we cut the top off of it, maybe I could get a ride:D. Are you going for a balanced car, or would that just be a benefit of what you are doing?

SWS

It'll be maybe 100lbs. I'm not really attempting to take the weight off, as much as make more room to work on the car, and move things where I think they should go.

The car very badly needs a more intelligent PCV system, as well as a good methanol setup to cool things down.

We can always take off one of the T-Tops so you can get your hulking body into the passenger seat :D

What is wrong with the PCV system? Trying to keep oil out of the intake?

SWS

Exactly...... I'll see if I can get a picture later. The connector comes from the back of the drivers side exhaust valve cover, and runs horizontally to the passenger side, where it is sucked into the intake. It catches a lot of oil. Especially cornering.

seawalkersee
02-02-2012, 01:52 PM
Easy peasy. Is it metal or plastic? If it is metal, I can patch that hole for ya. We will need to figure out where we can put an actual PCV valve on the front with a box to protect it from oil, and then run it into a catch can mounted to the side. Like I said, easy peasy. If you already had the catch can and tooobing, I could get it done in less than a day.

SWS

Here's what I was thinking --

http://bde-performance.com/pics/DSC02219.JPG

The stock PCV draws in fresh air at the top front of the valve cover. Ideally, that's where vacuum should be applied instead. I'd like to do something similar to what that guy did, with the exception of not making the fitting a T, so that the portion there only sucks air out.

On the back, I'd like to cap off one of the fittings on the drivers side, and make the very back fitting point straight up. The passenger side will need a fitting as well that does the same. I want them to go straight up to a line that runs right along the top edge of the cowl, over to where the battery sat for a catch can with a breather.

This all assumes I still decide to go with a Haltech. Otherwise I'll have to keep the metered air setup and reroute things obnixiously.

seawalkersee
02-03-2012, 02:39 PM
You lost me where you said it sucks air out. Is there something I can not see on the "T" fitting? Why not jut put a pair of catch cans there?

Blue shows new lines...

Orange shows flow of fresh air. The PCV Valve at the bottom of the valve covers are looped to the front, where the original PCV inlet is. The front ports are higher than the oil level would ever be, and they are properly baffled.

On the back, I'm coming straight up from the valve covers, and running horizontally over to a catch can on the passenger side. My hopes are that the rise before going horizontally will act as a trap to hold the oil from getting blown out of the valve covers.

Under vaccum, the air flows the path in orange. under boost, the excess pressure from blowby exits out the back of the exhaust valve covers, and goes to the catch can.

seawalkersee
02-04-2012, 04:30 PM
You still need a vacuum line that goes from the PCV system and catch can to the intake tube. I guess you CAN vent it to the outside, but every little bit helps with crank case pressure.

If you look from above the Intercooler, man, there's a lot of junk around it!

This is in fact looking directly at the back of the intercooler... Big coolant Res- is sticking in the way....

A view from below... The silvery thing at the top is the IC

More problems. I have yet to even begin tackling this C.F.

Dead center in this one is the PCV outlet I was talking about. It runs laterally along the back of the motor.

Another mess... The hard line closest to the spark plug well is the other side of the PCV Tube, where it gets drawn into the plenum. Below that is a turbo coolant line, and below that is the EGR.

This stuff sucks.

Pulled the intercoolers out.

This is the crowded side... I've removed the charcoal canister.

Specialty Z 2.5" Resonated test pipes

Old Style Z1 Motorsports divorced downtubes

Probably going to pull the heat wrap off of the downtubes, as my current motor is oiling places that should not be. The last thing I need is the heat wrap to go up like Mark's did.

Looks like it sucks. You can keep that itty bitty car. I will stick with the rooooooomy underhooded 4.6 T-bird. I put my luggage under there when I go on long trips. So much space, I feel like I am working on a 4.9 in a pick-up:D.

Are you going to upgrade to a single IC or what? I would definately clear behind those ICs and add fans if you are going to keep them.
