Differential ID and Mark VIII and Raxles

Well i had the trans out and when i lowered the diff to get the driveshaft out i noticed something strange.

Ohh yeah i got a 92 auto

Well my diff says 8 on it. Not 8.8 just 8. Now i have seen other SC diffs with 8.8 stamped right on them. I'm wondering whats going on.??
I know that the guy that had the car before me had 'played' with things a bit, but changing the diff is major work.

Anyone know anything about these diffs with just the 8 on them?
Also, i know right now there is a mark VIII in the junk yard, good and bad about those diffs?? Are they trakloc, and if i get this thinkg will my halfshaft fit it just the same, or will I have to get the shafts that come with the lincoln?? I'm going to check out raxles site right now

thanks
jim

ps do they have same gears or different??

Mk8's are all open diffs;
they had ABS/ATC, like 94-95 auto SCs,
so i believe none had Trac-lok diffs.

Mk8's usually have 3.08 gears.
i believe 3.27 or 3.33 was available in LSCs,
but the 6 or 8 i've seen in the salvage yard
were all 3.08, open.

The axles are the same as ours.

I've heard some folks with torquemonster SCs express concerns about catastrophic pinion deflection at high torque loads with the aluminum pumpkins /aluminum bearing caps,
but it may be mostly a consideration for 5-sp cars on slicks.

The weight savings is only about 8 lbs,
so the cost-effectiveness of buying the Mk8 pumpkin,
an SC trac-lok unit, and having gears installed, is dubious.
