Has any one looked at or know if the are any 5 speed automatics which could be adapted into our cars, 89-93 versions.
I consider I unlikely due to the bell housings and the controllers, but thought. Would throw this question out there......
Left knee is complaining:(

My 89 SC Bird has a 5 speed automatic. I guess the previous owner put it in. The engine is not original.

3.8 V6. Im sure its the same size as the original. The seller told me that the present engine is a replacement.

There is a man in eugene oregon, Garolds transmissions, he can make a few extra gears by installing custom clutch packs on certain models of transmissions that have enough room, I will see if it is possible to mod our transmissions to work, will try to get back here tomorrow night. Dave.:D

You cant get more gear ratio's with more clutch packs .. you need to add another overdrive or planetary unit.

Only reason for more gear ratio's is for better fuel economy.

I, too, want to hear more about this. The only Ford 5 speed auto I know of is the 5R55S, which came in the newer V6 Mustangs, Sport Tracs, etc.

I know its a 5 speed automatic. as many times I counted the shifts. I do not know what kind of transmission it is. I was about to run a thread as to why 1st to 2and shift is delayed.

Sometimes when the converter locks up, it will feel like an extra shift.

There is no converter lockup on an AOD.

It amazes me that as long as I have been working on these cars, I'm still learning! Thanks for the schooling

Most 5 spd auto's are no better than a 4r70w. The extra gear isn't even used most of the time. It is hard to beat a 4r70w in these cars.
The aod has a direct drive function that in stock form operates as a replacement for lockup. It is unreliable and a little abusive. Performance applciations and direct drive don't coexist well together.
