Once the block has been bored .030", if you need to replace the pistons you don't have to stick with another .010" over. You can go mid steps as the pistons are going to be custom anyway. So there can be 2-3 steps after .030" before you run out of stock. .040" is not too far but the further you go the less meat there is there. I'm aware of people going .060" but I don't recommend it as the cylinders will be significantly weakened.
 
Mine is.

As Dave can tell you, I have had mine bored to .040 and so far so good. It seems to be holding up well. It is making more power than it ever has and running very well, not that this has anything to do with your question, but yes I suppose it can be done.

Current bore size..3.875 perfectly fine with a second fan in front of the radiator runs very cool as it is its been 5000 hard miles since the rebuild with no problems
