belt tensioners

I usually put a socket and a breaker bar on the bolt on the pulley part of the tensioner (*NOT* on the bolt holding the body of the tensioner). Then turn the socket clockwise (like you are tightening the bolt) and the pulley will swing away from the belt allowing you to move the belt out from under the pulley. Then let the pulley back down SLOWLY, as there is a lot of tension on that spring! It takes a little practice to be able to hold the tensioner up with one hand and to use the other hand to move the belt. It helps to have a second set of hands. Just be careful not to let the socket slip off the pulley bolt while you are moving it. This will allow to snap back to quickly and can be dangerous and harmful to the tensioner and the human hands that might be in the way!
