exhuast manifold leak

I suspect i have an exhuast leak. i get a 'ticking' sound when i put the car in drive and give it gas. numerous exhuast shops say the exhuast from the cats back are okay. I wanted to know how to actually check to see if its the manifolds that are leaking. I do remember once doing a tune up and noticing the bolts on the manifolds were loose.
