Brake pedal start bypass

Had problems with our '90 automatic SC not starting with the brake pedal depressed. Bypassed the problem.

Take the panels off under the dash and find the relay in the attached photo. It's located to the right, above the fuse box. Pull the relay down as shown in the photo. Cut the two big red wires with blue stripes and tie them together. Put everything back. Car will start without depressing the brake pedal.

(Big thank you to David Dalke for his advice on this.)

For anyone else who does this, here is the source for the instrument panel clips you broke ;):
http://www.ebay.com/itm/400317952765?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649

(Or check www.clipsandfasteners.com; who is running that eBay auction anyway.)

I recently had a problem with an intermittent no-start condition. I also thought it was the relay, but I got to it and it tested fine. Then I investigated further and found that the ignition switch was separating. (And that was replaced at least once already - lousy design!) I replaced the ignition switch, and have had no further problems with that system.

I can salvage the clips....it's the broken posts that plague me. So far I've been able to epoxy and save, but I'm on the lookout for an undamaged panel.

Wow, $7.99/clip. Seems a little steep for something that fits in the nooks & crannies of the tool box @ the junkyard, but that's just me.

That's for 10 clips.

The plastic posts are plaguing me at the moment as well. What product has worked for you so far?

Sorry, just noticed your question.

Then I let dry where it's warm for two days before assembly back into the car. I have a Snap-On panel clip tool I use (like a two-pronged fork with a screw driver handle) to carefully coax them out to release the panel next time it needs to come away. Last time I had my alarm mod'ed, the shop just yanked and broke two of them, so these days I pull it out myself first and then re-install later.

Ok, thanks for the info. I may give it a try.

I also came across something called Maxim Multi-Fix Plastic Repair. It claims to be good with hard-to-bind plastics. I was thinking it might work well for these posts and also for building up the black strips on the bumpers that crack and turn yellow.

Has anyone tried that product?
