Looks like it will be starting on June 7th in Concord, SC and ending in the Wisconsin Dells on June 14th. I will add official information as it becomes available, but this is an unofficial list of stops that I have seen:

June 7 CONCORD, SC
June 8 KNOXVILLE, TN
June 9 CHARLESTON, WV
June 10 NORWALK, OH
June 11TBA?? maybe South Bend, IN or Indianapolis, IN would be a good stop?
June 12 BETTENDORF, IA ( Party at Fred's?)
June 13 WISCONSIN DELLS, WI? ( however this one was listed as tba on the last list I saw, could it be changing )

Looks like some of the same crew that participated in 2012 plan on doing this again in 2014.

We will be hitting the road this coming Thursday June 5th and plan to have 4 SCs in our group doing the entire 7 stop tour, which will take 10 days and cover about 2850 miles from home to home. The list of hotels and venues posted earlier in this thread has been updated, and includes the dates and addresses for where we will be each day.

Hope to see some of you guys along the way.

That's only 25 mins from my front door...granted I may be in Carlilse (or returning) when you drive thru...I'd try to meet up if a time was known/predetermined.

No pin point itinerary, just this official route. We usually try to leave pretty close to the scheduled times, so we will probably be on the road by 7:30 AM, so just estimate what time we should get there and send me a text that morning about when and where you want to meet, and we will try to make it happen.

Looking at the PDF directions I would be smarter just to meet everyone in Charleston WV at Noon for thats a 3 hour drive from Roanoke. Using the route provided I would travel 2 hours further just to meet up with the group to cruise in. My orginal thoughts about the route are different than what they have published.

Let me see what I can do with my schedule...seems like a worth while day trip to see everyone...I've done crazier things before.

That would be a pretty cool app/site to follow. As of right now I would say I am 90% on coming. I have Monday off from my primary job anyways and well I am scheduled to work at 630PM at AAP to help them with a manager who is out. I am sure I can shift my schedule to compensate and they're pretty flexible since I am helping them in a pinch.

Unless something catastrophic happens between now and then I will be there.

No rest on the Power Tour.

After hanging out at ZMAX for a couple of hours, we headed back to Western North Carolina to attempt to fix the brakes on Wise's car. We (mostly Chris) were able to get the brakes working with a used ABS pump motor that was delivered to us by Big Ed at what was supposed to be our hotel in Charlotte, NC. We rolled into our hotel in Knoxville, TN about 1:00 am. We are meeting for breakfast at 8:00 AM and then it is time for errands: car washes, replacement starter for scme94, review mirror repair kit for Neibert, hotel parking lot oil change for Wise, and Best Buy memory card run for me (left my new 64 GB microSD card at home and the GoPro fills the 16 GB card in a couple of hours--not long enough for an entire leg of the tour.

Wise and Neibert have been updating facebook and here's a link to my twitter account for those that have twitter:

Another day in the books.

Yesterday wasn't quite as wrenching-intensive as the previous days, but there was still wrenching to be had. We started out at the car wash. Chris decided to spray down under his brake master cylinder to get rid of any remaining brake fluid from the previous wrenching session which changed the ABS pump motor. we all returned to the hotel to finish cleaning the cars when Chris' passenger side window motor quit. He went to Autozone to pick up a new window motor and developed a miss. Upon returning to the hotel, a car with a guy and a girl followed Chris to where our cars were parked. While the guy talked to David and Chris and distracted them, the girl (or another person) stole David's big Craftsman tool bag from the back of his car (4 spaces away).

Despite changing every sensor on Chris' car, it still had a miss. After filing a police report, we headed to the show field. We arrived at the front of the cruise pack and ended up with awesome parking spaces. After the cars cooled off and we got our credentials stamped, Chris changed his plugs and window motor. The plug change did the trick.

Chris took us all to dinner, including the guy (can't remember his name) that helped us with the crank pulley problem two days early. When we returned, David's seat belt stuck in the forward position. Chris and David worked to permanently disable the automatic seat belts in David's car. With wrenching completed for the day, we had some more beer.

Since today's drive looks to be a bunch of two-lane winding roads, we are planning on departing the hotel at 6:30 and get a head start on the route.

I'll be posting updates on twitter and instagram, while David and Chris will be handling Facebook duties.

Great find!

Yesterday was a great day. The official route was 4-lane divided highway and had some fun turns and hills. There were a couple of sketchy parts, like a guy pulling a trailer that almost lost it going down a hill and around a turn right in front of Chris and Tony, or some boards laying in the road, or even the cluster of a mess we had getting gas in Pikeville, WV--otherwise, it was great. Neibert and I even got lined up at one of the numerous stop lights along the way. There's nothing impressive about two overloaded SC's on street tires accelerating up a hill from a stoplight....unless you really appreciate tire-spinning, sideways action while never breaking the speed limit. Downtown Charleston was nice. They had everything set up along the riverfront and once again, our arrival time left us with good parking.

After Tony needed to hand crank his SC each time we stopped, we convinced him to replace his starter. The starter was replaced for free via a lifetime warranty replacement from AutoZone. He managed 10 years out of the first starter.

Today's drive will be a bit more challenging due to the number road changes (yesterday only had 6), but should still be good.

Just a short update about our day yesterday. We drove the official route for the first half of the day, but then veered off towards Columbus because we heard the route had been changed due to a fatal accident overnight (not a participant). Anyway, we met up with Tom and Julie Wilhelm (original SCCoA members) in Tom's restored Vista Cruiser and headed to the track. Got caught in construction in the rain on 71 and our cars got destroyed with mud. Tony's starter still had some issues that are now hopefully fixed thanks to soldering the trigger wire in the hotel parking lot...only time will tell.

Gotta run!

Kurt K
06-12-2014, 07:54 AM
Yesterday is in the books. The destination for yesterday was the Lake County Fairgrounds in Crown Point, IN. We decided that we didn't want to get up early enough to do the route and chose to take I-80 the whole way there. Besides the trucks that would hang in the left lane and slow everyone down for miles and the misting-rain that hit us a lot of the way, the worst part was the highway itself. Tony thought his hood wasn't latched during the drive, Chris' A/C stopped working and David's car started randomly spitting smoke out from under the car. At the show field, Tony discovered that he lost a bump-stop for his hood and Chris diagnosed that at least one of the crimps on his custom A/C hoses has a leak, but David's diagnosis would have to wait until we had a paved parking space.

Back at the hotel, David discovered that the rear transmission seal was leaking. This is the same seal that was replaced at the Shootout in 2012 in the hotel parking lot. Even though Chris and David were able to replace the seal in a parking lot previously, we are choosing to roll on unless it get worse.

Today's route goes up near Rockford, IL, but we are staying clear of the Chicago traffic mess and just taking I-80 most of the way to Bettendorf, IA. So we slept in this morning and will get there early enough to wash our cars again.

Kurt K
06-13-2014, 07:26 AM
Stop 6 took us to Bettendorf, IA. After diagnosing David's leaking transmission seal the day before, we had plans to get to the venue and work on the seal. As we drove there, the leak got worse, so we ended up stopping at Tony's house in Joliet. It's a good thing we did, because I don't think we would have been able to get the car high enough to safely replace the seal with the equipment we had. It took us about an hour to get into the show field due to traffic; and all of our cars were running hot. We ended up with some of the best parking of the tour...covered! We left the venue after 6 pm and cars were still arriving! At the hotel, Chris discovered that one of front swaybar endlinks had come apart so we made a parts run to Autozone (the 3rd one of the day). We fixed the swaybar, ate some dinner and called it a day.

Heading to the Dells today.

Kurt K
06-14-2014, 07:13 AM
Stop 7 was in the Wisconsin Dells. We jumped out of the line to get into the place so we could wash our cars which proved to be costly. After finishing, we got back into line. 1.5 hours later, we made it the about 1.5 miles to the venue. According to a kid that worked there, they were expecting 1400 cars (typically, the total number of long haulers), not the 5-6000 cars that showed up. After idling for 1.5 hours, Chris decided to shut his car off once so that it could cool off for a while since the line had completely stop....it wouldn't restart. Quick diagnosis, the external fuel pump was bad--a replacement will be arriving at the hotel today. After doing the required time stamps and vendors, we went back to the cars to further investigate. The pump was removed, disassembled, cleaned up a bit, reassembled and put back in the car. It worked and we headed to the hotel.

This morning, we will be heading back to the venue for the Long Hauler group picture and to pick up whatever Hot Rod gives us for completing the drive. Then it will be back to the hotel to replace the pump and head home--another 350 miles or so for me.

Kurt K
06-15-2014, 12:22 AM
We all made it home without incident.

We headed to the venue to pickup our Long Haul goodies and stand in for the Long Haul group picture. We had a bit of good luck at the the picture. We stood somewhere in the middle of the hill. While standing there, we noticed one of the Hot Rod dudes pointing almost directly at me. A little later he is standing near us and talking on the radio, "pull the two Corvettes up to me in a V, one on the left of me and one on the right". That meant that the front of the picture was going to be right where we were standing. After the Corvettes arrived, the announcement came, "Everybody needs to move back behind the Corvettes". We had already moved at the front of the "V" between the cars. There were a few people that weaseled in front of us, but the rest had to file around the cars :) We should be easily located in the picture.

Afterwards, we got some breakfast and headed to the hotel. We waited for Chris' replacement fuel pump to arrive to the hotel before heading home. Chris decided that instead of changing the pump, he'd drive home without ever shutting off the car. It worked. He tried starting the car again after he got home and the pump was locked up again. He already has a plan to rework the setup.

Just some numbers for anyone considering participating in the Hot Rod Power Tour:

$795 for gas (abt 14.1 mpg for the trip)
$720 for hotel (my share of splitting a room)
aprox 2800 miles total
Worst tank mileage (8.6 mpg, this was the 1.5 miles in 1.5 hours trying to enter Chula Vista Resort in Wisconsin Dells.

I haven't added up the food or beer totals.

Wzenheimer
06-17-2014, 04:31 PM
I was a sleeping zombie on Sunday. I think mine is more due to all the chit I still need to fix. All of which is a bit overwhelming.

I averaged 15.4 MPG on my trip spending a total of about $620 on gas for the 2300 miles I drove.

The tour was a great way yet expensive way to shakedown all of the bits wrong with my car. Had I not drove that many miles in a short period of time I'm not sure I would of found all of the issues that arose. The obvious fixes so far are:

Replacing the stock SC balancer with the a BHJ (Already ordered and arrived.)
Re-balancing all of the wheels again and verifying run out and verifying that they are concentric.
Repair and replace the discharge AC line on my AC. Found that the hose I used was wrong for the fittings and ordered all new parts.
Update the fuel system for something more daily driven. This will basically mean ditching the surge tank and Magnafuel 625 pump. I've already returned the new one I ordered for overnight Saturday delivery back to Summit. I'll now rely exclusively on the 340lph stealth in-tank pump. If I have issues I'll add a boost a pump.
Fix the passenger side door rattle.
Replace front brake pads with something that creates much less dust.
Re-tune the transmission for better drive ability.
Cut back the upper radiator hose as its too close to the A/C pulley.
Install an 8 rib pulley setup with the BHJ balancer for more boost (upgrades!!)

On a final note I spoke with Bell intercooler again today. They are a bit baffled as to why my inlet charge is going as high as it is but gave me some direction to look. Need to verify I'm getting 12 gpm of flow or greater with my pump. I also need to install a bypass for track use around the heat exchanger to work in coordination with the ice tank. I need to verify the pressure drop of the intercooler as well and anything more than 1 psi is unacceptable. They also said I need a bigger volume of fluid for my tank and that the 4.5 gallons I have really isn't enough for racing. I really would like to shift over my radiator about 4 inches anyway so I may end up with one of their units that are smaller and more efficient anyway or a spearco unit like I had before.

Anyway, I'll have the fuel system, AC line, door rattle, and trans re-tune hopefully done this weekend. The rest can wait until I have a hand or two to verify some data.

I need to get my tail shaft bushing replaced on the AOD and have the bushing lube mod done like Alan did on Kurt's AOD. After trashing another rear seal after only 3000 miles and feeling how loosely the drive shaft yoke fits, I'm pretty much convinced the bushing is the problem. Also explains the high speed vibrations I was feeling.

Ugh. Hopefully, my high speed vibrations are tire/balance issues.

I never even thought about the bushing until Dan Thornsberry mentioned it on FB. Then I remembered thinking that the fitment of the yoke to the transmission output shaft felt a lot looser than I expected. That would explain why this seal only lasted 3000 miles and why the previous seal failed immediately after being on the dyno at the 2012 Shootout.

Trailering car to Alan's shop Saturday morning to take care of it. He is going to have a tailshaft housing already reworked with a new bushing and the lube mod prior to my arrival, so all we have to do is swap it out and install a new yoke and u-joint on my driveshaft. If all goes to plan, I'll be headed back to STL by 2:30 Saturday afternoon.

I had a vibration and inspected the driveline and thought the bushing exhibited excess play, but the seal wasn't leaking - i went in to have the bushing replaced and was told it didn't merit changing. They did find an issue with a front wheel bearing, tho... That was over a year ago and it's been fine since.

Rich,

The yoke does have a spot on the seal surface that looks a little suspicious, so we are planning to install another yoke and a new u-joint.
