T56 updates

before my engine went back in 2012 I had a few issued that needed to be addressed. there was a growling noise and if you depressed the clutch the noise went away. Everything seemed to work just made a noise every once in a while. The decision was made to install a new master cylinder that was matched to the T56 slave. I have not been very motivated for the past while but started working on the master installation. Next up I have to drop in the new engine and reinstall the transmission. We are spacing the transmission back to improve a clearance issue we ran into with the input shaft hitting the pilot bushing. This was likely the cause of the noise but hopefully the wildwood master will improve the system.

I will have to get a new drive shaft made again but I hope to be ready for early spring this year if I can get everything together

That is a real nice looking setup. We are going to space the transmission back on Phil's also. We plan to use several separator plates stacked up between the Mcleod bellhousing and the separator plate.

For those that don't know, the problem we ran into with John's setup is that the hydraulic capacity of the stock SC master cylinder is not compatible with the LS and aftermarket slave cylinders so the mechanical advantage was all wrong. We tried to compensate by altering the leverage on the pedal, but that was only marginally effective.

I used the following in my setup (see the old thread for pics) a 1/2" McLeod scollop spacer, a GM pilot Brg, a bronze sleeve to fit the GM Brg into the Ford hub, a viper slave (my front plate is a viper vs an LS1) and a 0.4" slave pedestal spacer. The slave spacer and sleeve were made by local machinist.
Note: due to life getting priority, mine hasn't been on the street. But, I didn't see any issues when mocking up outside the car. I am working on similar setup behind a BBF.
Will be watching this:)

You'll understand the problem once you drive it. The LS and Viper (and aftermarket) master cylinders are all based on a 3/4" piston diameter but the SC is more like .900" (going on memory here), so the result is the slave over-travels badly. We didn't discover the problem until we went to drive it. As for the space problem - well we had a specially machined pilot bushing that by the measurement seemed like it would work but it was destroyed in service. I think there were a couple problems with it, so spacing the transmission back seems like the best solution especially since that helps the shifter alignment a bit as well and will allow the use of a standard bushing/pilot bearing.

As with any mod I ran into a problem tonight the bracket that the slave mounts to and pivots on the firewall bracket actually needs to be where the booster is so I have to modify it but I think I can still use the components from Macleod. Dash is out will post more pictures soon.

The spacers are 1/2and 1/4 inch and I also have longer dowels.

So how was the t56 once you opened it up? Lucky Phil.

Thanks sucks David. I hope it works out.my daughter helped me install it tonight and my dash is back in now to rewire. Will drop in engine tomorrow

Not very nice. We replaced all the bearings, but we'll see once it's in the car if it's any good or not.

Here are some more pictures of todays progress. dash is back in, Engine has been installed. I need to get some fittings and hardware for the transmission and clutch lines before I contunue. I also need a new spacer.

transmission is finally in

I was side tracked earlier this year as we decided to move. New place has a shop and garage so I was able to bring my car hoist home for the first time. It took me a few months to get organized before winter. Now that the snow is here I finally have sometime to work on the car.

The clutch is back in as is the transmission, new drive shaft and gas tank.

I now have to run the lines to the slave and get the exhaust back in so I can get the rest of the engine parts back on.

Attached are a few pictures of the progress today.
