View Full Version : Part Number for boots for RCV Performance hardened outer axle joints

I called RCV today to get boots for my outer joints since I hear the factory boots will not work. The people at RCV transferred my call to 'another plant', and there I got voice mail.... Does anyone know the right part number for these so I can just order it off the website? Im assuming you can order it via a part number. Or, another source?

Ok, I just called RCV Axle. They dont make boots, but their sister company Rockford CV does. I talked to them, and they dont have anything near what I need to make this work. This is what I have: housing ~3.85" bar:1.20" and 1.50"(Driver, Passenger), boot height 5.25". The boot height was given to me by Rockford CV as the proper boot height and I think it would be good to stick with that since I dont know what all Im changing. Any help? Someone has to have put these axle stubs on their cars by now, that means someone has to know where to go...

I might have figured it out. These joints look a lot like the RCV Axle Pro4 joint. So, looking at the boots that they have on the site, the Pro4 boot will work up to 1.5" bar (passenger shaft), and the bar side of the boot starts off at .80", then it would work for driver side too. Now, talking to one of the people at their wharehouse, the joint side of the boot is ~4.1" while the joint is 3.85". Not sure how that will turn out. Also, standing height of the Ford boot is 5" while the RCV boot is 6". Not sure how well that will work either. The height may not be a problem if I can make some of that up to prevent the boot from compressing and causing the bellows to rub. But, if the angle isnt too sharp then it wouldnt be a issue. I ordered a couple of them to see how this works out. P/N: BAT-100

Got the boots from RCV and I knew they would be a little bigger. But, Im not sure I will be able to get the grease to stay in. I know with any other axle boot I have replace that if the boot wasnt snug on the joint to begin with, it most likely would not hold the grease. Can these things be shrunk? Anybody with experience making this work?

Maybe I missed it, but why are you not using the stock boots?

Can you? I was told that they couldn't be used. The joint is a little bigger. But, I could give it a try. You used the factory boots?

Actually mine are still sitting in the box waiting to be installed, so I don't know for sure, but the car I bought them for is starting to come together, so I may as well get on with it. I'll have some time Sunday afternoon to mess with it, and I'll post back with what I find. I just figured the size difference looks to be pretty small, so I would start there.

I tried the Mark VIII boot, and no go. It doesnt stretch at all. I tried heating the boot too, no luck. The RCV boot is way too big on the Pro4 joint side. I dont get it. They make joints for applications by customizing a basic design like the ends, but the inboard side of the joint is the same. So, why not make a boot that fits that common dimension? I dont know. This is irritating. I'll try a universal band and a different banding tool in the morning.

So, I knocked the factory joint off a Mark VIII axle I had and cleaned it up.

I found a stretch boot that fit snug. It felt flimsy, but this is my first time using a stretch boot, so I dont know. I used the grease that came with the boot and worked it into the joint till the bag was empty. We'll see how long the boot lasts if it does, and if it holds the grease. I have some doubt. I cant recomend this till Ive driven it for a while to prove that this boot is ok. But, the part number is Doorman P/N 614-001

The other thing that bothers me some is that the FWD knuckle bolt is VERY close to the boot. The joint is bigger than the factory joint by a lot at that point. If I had known this, I would have ground the bolt/nut down some at that point to make a little room without ruining the nut/bolt. I guess I'll see if this works too.

How are the Dorman boots holding up?

Any issues with the RCV joints?

They worked great. I beat the hell out of the car at the track and not a problem with the joints them selves. I turned the diff to liquid metal though. I think either the aluminum case flexed, or the aluminum caps did and torched the gears. So, I have built another differential using a iron housing, a Auburn Pro diff, 3.73s I got out of a explorer, and am using a LPW cover with brace. That should do it. I did scuff the boot on the passenger side and it started leaking grease. My fault though. I didn't cut down the nut like I did on the driver side to make room. Had I done that, the boot would have been fine.
