Well I guess I know the pro's, but what are con's to mounting the battery in the trunk? And what is required by law or just strongly suggested?

Cons:

1) Basically there is there just one downside to having the battery in the trunk that I can think of.....If not done properly, and there is a cut on the power wire causing it to be exposed, you will be in deep ~~~~~. Not really a downside but just a reminder to be extra careful when doing this.

As far as what is required by law I am not really sure, but most tracks will not let you run unless there is an external cut off switch.

Highly recommended :

1) Sealed battery box (http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=10953)

2) Battery Box Strap.

3) Load Fuse (300 - 500 amps)

4) 2 gauge resistance welding grounding cable (20ft) to be used for the power wire as well as ground.

5) 20 ft old garden hose. This way you can cut it open and run the power cable within the hose for added protection.

Hope this helps.

My immediate concern would be less space for groceries.

Check out Johnson Controls Optima Batteries.
They are spiral core for more power due to increased surface area over conventional plates.
They wrap the internals in fiberglass mat so the acid won't leak out. These batteries last longer, provide more power, and you can mount them in any position.
Red top are starting / running and would be a good application for this.
