shift selector spring

I posted my initial problem in the drive train section but no response so I came down here for some help. Long and short my shifter is dicked. Pulled apart and two of the three torx bolts holding the dust boot onto the shifter housing were missing and the third was hanging on for dear life. The boot was cracked. I didn't even pull it apart to inspect because I've got a ripper to replace it but inside the housing I found the selector spring lying in there and can't find a diagram of how it should go. I think it's okay to reuse as I think it was knocked off when I panicked trying to get it in gear and because the two bolts were missing I could spin the shift lever enough to knock it off. I posted a pic of how I think it should go based on the instructions for installing the ripper. Any help is appreciated and if you noticed anything amiss in the pics that I don't see please tell. Trans fluid looks good and clean though.

If you're installing a ripper, I don't think the factory spring is necessary. The ripper has its own centering spring.

Okay thanks, good to know. The instructions say to use it I just want to make sure I have it correctly installed? Instructions say to make sure it's to the left of the ball when putting into receiver.

I test fit it the way it's pictured and it shifts really well so far as I can tell with car Parked engine off. Much tighter and shorter throw. Third and fourth are straight up and down with no hunting and first and second are hard pull to left which makes me think the stock spring might be over kill and make first to second tricky if it really wants to pull to neutral coming through the gate. I'm just happy that so far as I can tell it's not an internal issue.

Hope nothing fell into the trans from the stock unit.

You have it right. Parts of the old shifter most definitely fell into the transmission and are now mostly ground up into mush. It happens to all of them. Usually the permanent damage is minimal.

Your instructions say to use it? Mine say the spring can be removed. That's really weird. Should I put the spring back in?

I could be wrong. I was in a rush and was loosing day light but I do recall the instructions mentioning using a small flathead to hold the spring to the left when positing the the ball but that might have been from a how to on the rebuild kit I was referencing at the same time.
