Before you go ahead and pay some mechanic some god-aweful amount of money to work on a car he knows little about, I would consider asking if anyone in the club might be interested in making some money (myself not included) and get the job done cheaper for yourself at the same time. You'd be surprised how mutually benificial that might be. This way, you get someone knowledgeable and experienced to help you and/or do it for you, and on your own time, rather than waiting forever.

Just a suggestion. I am NOT refering to Sean here BTW.

Chris,

The 3.8 that you put back in is the NA engine that you pulled out, right? If so, HG's might be much easier for you to do since there's less that needs to be pulled off the motor to get at the heads. Why don't you look at doing them yourself? Heck, that 3.8 won't be in there for long, right? Why not use that mill as a training piece for yourself?

Cheers,

Sean

i just did my HG's on my 3.8 NA this past july, i would be willing to lend a hand on a saturday if you want.. we can have the heads off and to the machine shop in about 4 hours
but its the case where if 1 side goes you might as well do the other..
let me know

doing my HG's myself cost me 328.43 out the door
thats with the heads being sent to halton machine shop and even my block being milled a bit not sure how they did that but anyway

I agree with Bill. See if an SCCoO member will do the job. Is the motor a non-aspirated 3.8L or is it SCd?

Bruce,

I'd really be interested in hearing how they decked your block with the engine still in the car!!! ;)

Cheers,

Sean

How could you possibly deck a block with the motor in the car?

Hey all

First lol i have no place to do it atm because all the engine work was done on orangeville thats one hell of a tow to get it there lol, and this is the origonal 3.8L Non SC that came with it about 3 years ago now, has about 170k on it id say about time it went lol. and the 5.0 HO that was in this summer i had issues with so we pulled it back out and but the old one back in so the 5.0 could get rebuilt. and about decking out the block wile its in the car LOL that just wont work hehehe we had to take them out to do anything like that up in orangeville. About doing it my self now the car is in the comlpex parking lot i dont thing we could do a head job in the parking lot hehehe, will need somewere to put the car for this unless i pay someone ! & yes it would be so much cheaper to do it my self

i have no idea what they did, i took the heads in and the guy asked me if i had done anything for the block and i simply told him i was going to bother removing the block too and he said well bring it in and ill mill it
cost me like 20 extra dollars
personally i think he took a scraper and just scraped the surface then 3med it to a shine lol
but whatever it works cars got 378,220 kms on it now and still pulls hard
enough to give rice a good run =)

Decking the block in the car can be done, but I wouldn't use that term. They probably used blue ink, file and plenty of hand work.

the coolant is, i repeat is comming out the exaust now from what i told thats a nasty issue, now the oil isnt milky yet (Oil & coolant mixing) so i assuming the eng it self id fine, or is it better just to get another 3.8 for now or just get a 3.8 sc with all the moduals a drop it in ?

thanks for any advice

Chris

If coolant is coming out the exhaust, that means coolant is getting into the combustion chamber, and is being forced out when the exhaust valve opens. It is only a matter of time until you get coolant contamination in the oil, so don't run the car anymore if you intent to salvage that engine.

Doing head gaskets in the car is a much less expensive and less time consuming option than re+reing the entire engine to put in a used one. I would recommend doing the HG job yourself, or have someone help you as we've all recommended.

I've never actually witnessed an SC engine coming out...but I hear it's pretty neat.
