Late model tank install

I'm swapping out the tank while I do the fuel pump and exhaust upgrade. Two questions;

1) The heat shield and "skid plate" look like absolute poo. Came out of a northern junk yard car. Would you guys consider installing it without the metal and just lining the exhaust tunnel with some reflective mat or tape?
2) Does this tank use the same straps? I just haven't compared them yet and though I would ask.

The shield is there for a reason. I would think anything is better than nothing.
If I remember correctly, I reused my original straps for the early style tank. Didn't seem to fit the best, but it fit.

Straps are definitely different. I have run the tank without the heat shield with stock exhaust and no issues, but if you are running larger or dual exhaust, it will run substantially closer to the tank, so if any exhaust upgrades are planned, I would say keep the shield. Also, remember to remove the exhaust bracket on the inside of the driver's rocker before you put the new tank up.
