OK, I turn the key to the run position, all the normal idiot lights come on, but the fan turns on high, you can hear the abs, and fuel pumps running, and the tach jumps around, and there's a black box, behind the passenger side headlight that constantly clicks, until you turn the key off. Swapped out the dis for a known good one, and replaced the ignition switch (needed to anyway), and still no change. I'm stumped. Never had this issue before. 90 anny.

The constantly clicking box is likely to be the IRCM or Integrated Relay Control Module. It is associated with the operation of the EEC although I think the EEC feeds the IRCM power. I'm not sure since I'm used to reading Grumman Navy aircraft schematics not these funky Ford diagrams.

Sounds like a possible loose wire. Check battery connections are clean and tight. Check all grounds, one thick gauge cable near the left engine mount, one smaller gauge cable near the left headlight on the radiator support, one flat strap near the right engine mount. Also check fuse block for melted terminals. There's a lot of fuseable links and connections near the starter relay.

If the ircm is clicking on and off, I would think a bad connection.

Another slight possibility is the battery just plain went dead. Seen them perform completely normal then hours later be completely dead.

Best luck,

JJ

My car won't start either, and the clicking may be the IRCM, as others have mentioned. I don't have a constant clicking, but I'm getting some things that are cycling on and off, randomly, under my hood.

Just putting this out there for you since I don't see it in anyone else's posts. Have you checked the start interrupt relay?

There is a start interrupt relay on the 90 models that activates when you step on the brake pedal before starting the car.

I was having starting issues with my 90 and had already replaced the ignition switch too.

This relay is known to fail and I found a previous post and did what was shown there and no more starting problem.

Here is the link to that post:
