What system did it come with originally?

Tape, CD, sub-woofer, premium, JBL...? P/N on your old unit?

Good evening

Here is a partial list of radio replacements for 1989 to at least 1992 cougar and thunderbirds : http://www.carstereohelp.com/ford.htm. https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=3&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwjrupCzy8XRAhVKxmMKHbCEBIYQFgglMAI&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.35thatr.org%2FRadio%2FJBLRepl ace.htm&usg=AFQjCNGLEihz_gdLjan07sO9H5A6MRDqig&sig2=3SjB7MA-mn5x3PoK9lsa0A

As you can see most radio repair services avoid these unit due to obsolete parts. Salvage yards with late model Lincoln Continental , Lincoln Mark VII, Mark VIII, and 1-2 generation SHO Taurus are your best bests for JBL premium units in my experience but it is real hit or miss if the unit is on its "last legs". You will need to do some modification and add the factory jumper for non premium unit to work. See below.
