View Full Version : 89 sway bar question

Do the 89 front sway bars run a true 1.20"? I was cleaning out my garage and have what I was sure was an 89 front bar, but it only measured 1.13" on my calipers.

If it isn't an 89 bar, is it the stock front bar from my 94?

1.12" maybe? That would make it a '92 SC front, I think.

I purchased an 89 bar from a local member who owned and parted the car it came from, I saw the car when he still drove it, and ended up selling it back to him when I measured it at the same 1.13". We speculated that maybe it was replaced for whatever reason, but I think the 1.20" bar is a myth at this point.

Interesting. Has anyone here ever actually measured an 89 front bar at 1.20"?

FWIW, the Ford parts catalogue shows the 89-92 SC front bar as 1.141" diameter. 93-95 shows as 1.10".

I don't have my documentation on this but a few years ago I did part out an 89SC (I know it was a very early model b/c that engine was still externally balanced) and there were other things like more screws and stuff in the dash that you didn't see in a 91-92 "early body style" car (it was like the car hadn't been fully cost-reduced yet). I also seem to recall that when I sold off some of the parts, one of my buyers was not happy that the swaybar he received did not match the measurements he expected.

I ended up giving him a partial refund so both parties were OK but you might actually be right here that the summary of sway bar sizes on TCCOA is incorrect.

It has been my experience as well that the chart is inconsistent with the cars I have put hands on. I think I ran into this exact same scenario with the 1.20" bar.
