How hard is it to change a rear hub asmbly? The bearig popped out from what my buddy is saying. I found a used one at a junk yard for $75. Can an average Joe like me cahnge this, or should I fork out the cash and have someone fix it for me? Any help would be great. Thanks
ok here it is....if he popped out the bearing his wheel came off....If thats what happened you gonna have a world of problems. You will have to replace the whole knuckle.
As far as the knuckle its 3 bolts (usually very tight) and i dont recommend using used ones unless you replace the bearing which needs to be pressed in and out. ALWAYS get new hubs too. They take a lot of strain...Thats the only thing holding you wheel to the rest of the car.
The bearing is retained by a retaining clip. But it also is pressed in there very hard. So if it came out, it's likely you need to replace the knuckle.
There is a good article on this done by George Davenport here at the SCCOA website.
