my sc didn't have a thermostat when i bought it so i put in a 195 in and it just over heats. i'm not sure the fan turns on but it does work when i turn on the a/c. the car doesn't seem to like that temp at all. it runs like crap and it doesn't want to start. so i removed it and it runs fine now. the temp never goes past half way. whats up with this?

The first question is why was it out??? I bought a 92 lx once that had the thermostat out becouse the head gaskets were going and was putting pressure on the rad. fluid. With the t-stat in it pushed all the fluid out. with the thermostat out it was fine. If you still have the owners # I would give a call and find out why. You could also try a 180 t-stat, it will open sooner and not run as hot...Bill

P.S. did you pull the cap off and see if theres fluid flow when it's running and warmed up. You might have a blockage in the radiator, just another check that doesn't cost you any money.

I'd certainly check out the above suggestions, as there does appear to be an unusual problem. Don't forget that only the low speed fan comes on with the a/c; so your high speed may be fried and causing the engine to overheat. Get the fan motor checked out & don't buy the Ford SC replacement unit, because they'll sell you the whole fan & shroud for about $350. Go to a good auto parts store like Nappa or AutoZone, as I believe the two speed Escort fan motor for around $80 is the same.

Hot Cougar

I have a '90 XR7 and it is heating up way too hot and then all of the sudden the temp drops and the heat starts to blow. It did this about five times. So i figured it was the thermostat. I replaced it with a 180. same thing. I start it up all the coolant goes into the puke tank and it acts likes the thermostat isn't opening. I was told by a couple of people that the water pump took a crap but I don't see how. has anyone ever heard about a water pump where the impeller comes loose from the shaft? What else should I check???
