rear gears

I was wondering about swapping to 3:55 rear gears in my 1990 SC five-speed 35th. But what would it do to my gas milage, top speed, and how much of a difference in acceleration would they make?

Thanks!

I bought a set of 3.27's. The reasoning for this is going from a 2.73 to a 3.27 is like going from a 3.27 to a 3.73. The 2.73 to 3.55 is like going from a 3.27 to a 4.10. It would be overkill and you wouldn't really need 1st gear. I would like to have tried them out though. I was so close to buying 3.55's but instead I have settled on 3.27's. I heard a lot of the 5-speed guys say that 3.27 is the highest to go.

Depends what your going for. I went from 2:73 to 3:55 and hated it. Lucky for me I dont drive it that much. The 2:73 just suited my driving style much better. If I had to do it again for a comfortable/ fun car thats not a race car, I'd go with the 3:27s. As for gas mileage, I cant help you out there. I did too many things at once and dont know what effected it, and how much on an individual basis.
3:55 = fun
3:27 = comfort
just my 2 cents, I'm sure there will be disagreements

3:55's = Junk. They suck, First gear is useless, you have to shift all the time. Highway RPM's are horrible, you are at like 2700 -3000 RPMs to run at 75 MPH. They feel like you are really taking off but if you watch your speed you will see that you are not moving fast at all. And if you line up against anyone with 2:73's, 3:08's or 3.27's you are going to lose. I know from experience. I had a 5-speed and I went with 3:08's because they were better than the 2.73's and they still gave me good highway mileage. They would be = to a 3.31 in an auto. Go with 3.08's or 3.27's stay away from 3.55's. You should also replace the clutch packs while your at it.
