Resonators vs. Mufflers

What is the actual function of a resonator? I'm lucky enough to live in a state where emmissions aren't of consideration. Regardless, I'll be adding high flow cats. My question is about the remaining back half of the exhaust. Should I completely eliminate the resonator and keep true dual 2.5 back to a pair of nice mufflers? Or should I, as read in a previous thread, use a larger resonator and elimate the mufflers but compensate with Borla tips?

Thanks for any/all advice.

it will sound flat and "blatty", like one of those Buick Grand Nationals without the turbo noise, probably closer to a Fiero without a resonator:D

I originally had no resonator on my true duals. IT WAS AWEFUL. Defending loud inside, kinda crappy outside. So I had them stick in a two 12" glasspacks, and that took care of it. Night and day difference. Best part was the mufflers were only $20 a piece.
