I am doing the head gaskets on my faster SC and rebuilding the short block on my 3.8 four barrel Mustang. I have two sets of heads that have porting and springs. I ported the heads I've been running on the Stang to the max and they make awesome power with just a Holley carb and cam. These heads were milled a little to bump compression up also in the naturally aspirated application. I also have Steve Griffith's old head that he ran low 12's verified and an high 11 to take his word for it. These heads he had ported but to me it was only a slight port job. Compaired to my ported heads they aren't as radical. But the smaller port heads have never been milled down a significant amount so compression would be stock.
I'm going to install Steve's old cam also which is a custom blower grind with big lift and duration.
I would like to use the max ported heads on the SC and the mild ported heads on the stang. This would suit both cars intended purpose better. But I fear the milling on the big heads might raise compression too much on the SC. I know Fred runs higher than stock compression on his "mile high spec" motors and the later SC's also bumped up compression by .3 points without any drama.
Has anyone else raised compression on the SC? What were the results? Anyone have an educated opinion?
Thanks, Vernon
