Timing Question

Hey guys, I recently finished putting my engine back together last week and I had to put a new timing cover on. So I had to take the whole Cam sensor assembly or whatever it is called out to swap it in the new one. At first the timing was way off and wouldn't start. I eventually got the timing somewhat close for it to start, but it won't idle. So I was wondering how I can tell if the timing is set properly.

Did you use the cam positioning tool?

No I just turned it by hand, beacuse I don't know where to get the tool from.

Thank you all who replied, I got my car running right. It turned out to be a small vaccume leak and I also had a cracked spark plug which made it skip really bad under medium to heavy acceleration.
