Would anyone be interested in a Group Purchase for a full stud girdle and main studs from Morana Racing. Ties together all 6 cylinders unlike some other girdles. These normally retail 175+shipping for the girdle and around 80.00 for the studs.
If we get enough people interested I will get in touch with him and get something going.
Thanks,
Zach

interested as well. Do you know what material he is using for the stud girdle. Also, are the studs ARP?

Yes you can either get the morana stud/bolt kit or ARP Main Studs.
The ARP Main Studs retail at 140.00 and the Custom Morana ones are 120.00.
The girdles are constructed of hardened steel and tie all the caps together.
I would say we need at least 5 SERIOUS Buyers to get a GP going.
Let me know.

Zach

Zach, lets talk some #s($$$), I may get involved. On the flip side, if this doesnt go through and there are a handfull of people interested, I may offer one on my own.

Paul, I have not officially contacted Tom yet about this GP. If you have a stud girdle and the appropriate studs needed, then by all means let us know.
I only said morana because I thought Tom was the only guy with a full stud girdle. I know Coy has one but who wants to spend that much.
I would rather stick with you since I've already been involved in 2 GP's with you. Please drop me an e-mail and we'll get this rolling.
Thanks,
Zach

Zach, I dont have a girdle available as of yet and to be honest, cant get the ball rolling on one will mid June at the soonest. I DO have the CAD drawing already though (provided by an mechanical engineer who had one made that has been in use for some time now along with sourced studs), however I have not priced them out due to a lack of time (remember, moving to LA from NY next week). I recommend you start with Tom and see where things go. Either way, you probably will be looking at a week or so before you get the ball rolling on the buy. Keep me posted either on here or email how you are making out and we will take it as it comes.

Alright, forgive my ignorance on this, I'm still on the learning curve, the ARP bolts we are talking about here are NOT the same as the headbolts correct? These are a different set of bolts?
Otherwise, we can go with the Chevy bolts and the Morana Girdle and save money.
In any case, I'm still in, but we need to get this moving.

yes these are not the same as the ARP head studs.
I, personally will most likely be going with morana's stud/bolt combo for the girdle.
I have e-mailed TOm and it seems he is extremely busy and still has not replied back.
I'll keep updated.

Just out of curiousity, did this end up being DOA?? Are there currently other suppliers besides Morana, or is he the way to go?

I think you're right. This thing is dead, but drop Paul @ BTM a line. He's getting something together that I think you may want in on. That's who I'm waiting for.

ps You could talk to Coy Miller.

Coy Miller made the first 3.8L main Stud girdle over 4 years ago. He still offers them. Coy Miller (http://www.coymiller.com)

I am going to purchase one myself. 5mm is alot to mill off the main caps you think? Morana sells the stud kit and main stud together? Does anyone have a tech article on the installation?

Rich Id give Paul at BTM a holla...Different design very little milling of caps required

The girdle we are working on will not require you to machine the center section of the caps like the other manufacturers do. This is a key component in the strength of the bottom end and the overall gains when adding the girdle after removing the material are severely diminished. I cannot provide a timeline as of yet since the prototype piece is in the midst of production as I type this and needs to be fitted and potentially adjusted in some areas before full production begins.

The girdle we are working on will not require you to machine the center section of the caps like the other manufacturers do Now I could be mistaken (or just loosing my memory), but I don't remember having to machine any material off my main caps when my engine was assembled with the CMRE main stud girdle.

Well, I never stated that the CMRE piece requires machining of the caps. I have seen a main girdle for the 3.8 by another company other than Coy and Morana which required machining, but the price was outrageous and the design weak IMO. Since we are nitpicking, Ill point out two issues of concern with regard to the CMRE piece, both of which are listed on his site. First, its aluminum, not heat treated steel so though it weighs less, it isn't going to be as strong as what I am working on. Second, CMRE requires a min purchase for the honor of buying their parts, their main studs and the girdle dont total the $500 minimum.
I am certain the pieces Coy and Morana offer are of high quality and obviously, must be getting the job done since I havent heard any complaints about them to my recollection. Several people have asked me to get a girdle to market that would be competitive in price yet better than anything out there and that is what I am striving to do. I really haven't the interest in debating every little thing every time some kind of a purchase ends up in a thread involving BTM.

Well, I never stated that the CMRE piece requires machining of the caps. You're correct, but you can't convince me that it wasn't implied. I was just telling my experience.

Maybe Coy changed his girdle since I bought one, but mine is definitely not aluminum...the damn thing weighs about 20 lbs. As for the minimun purchase, I agree that that is unfortunate.

I had the CMRE main stud girdle on my 95 motor. It was steel. I will find out about the Morana one when I get it. Cannot say which one is better. I believe 5mm needs to be fly cut off the main caps for the Morana stud girdle. I agree removing material off the main caps is not what I would prefer to do. Also the CMRE main stud does not allow for the use of the windage tray. My hope is a main stud girdle that allow you to keep the windage tray. If I remember you could install a windage screen if you welded it to the girdle.
Paul, What price range are you looking at? Main Stud Girdle, Studs, etc... The Morana one is $350 before shipping and duty taxes. CMRE is more.

I also have a CMRE girdle, bought about 18 months ago. Definately Steel, you also need to modify the oil dipstick and the mounting bracket for the oil pickup.
BT Motorsports

Coy lists his girdle on the site as 6061 which is why I stated it to be aluminum.
With regard to the girdle we are working on, every effort is being made to allow installation without modification of the main caps or the pan as well as the dipstick and mounting bracket. Once we pass those hurdles, the incorporation of the windage tray will be investigated, though we may offer a crank scraper instead.
I cannot really comment on price at this time since the R&D isnt complete, however I expect it to fall between the cost of the CMRE and Morana piece.

Out of curiousity for me who is not technically incline ;-) can the stud girdle be installed from underneath without the removal of the engine? Looks like this item won't be done until after my engine is done (hopefully... if my engine is done in the next year! :-/) So I'd like to try and do it myself ...

I believe the "K" member would have to be removed to do it from under the car. Considering the other things involved with installing the girdle, I wouldn't do it with the engine in the car.

Stud girdle cannot be installed while the engine is in the car.
Does anyone have pictures of the Morana stud girdle and the CMRE.

Here is a picture of my Morana stud girdle. I believe the design may have changed slightly in the last 2 years, but this is how it looked when I installed it.
