Quick question guys...

in the process of removing my harmonic balancer to diagnose a ticking sound. I just pulled the belts off and then the crank pulley.

Is it safe to start the engine with no crank pulley on? I know the water pump and alternator and stuff wont be powered, but I just need to run it a couple seconds to see if the ticking sound is there or not.

If it's not there, then I know the crank pulley is banging on something. If it's still there, then I suspect one of the fins on the back of the HB is slightly bent so it's wacking the crank sensor.

Won't hurt anything. I had a crank sensor touching once. It made a distinct ticking sound that was hard to pinpoint from above but when you put your head under the bumper it was really loud.
