Rear brake calipers, why the screw in piston?

My 84 SVO had this same thing. What is the purpose of it? Is it a problem that Ford tried to fix by using this design?

Thanks

Phil

No, it's because of the connection to the parking brake mechanism. One of the disadvantages to rear disc brakes. You'll notice a lot of new vehicles are going back to using drum brakes on the rear, because of this. I've not had any problems with my SC's (except the pain of screwing those pistons back in), but I have had other rear disc calipers sieze up because if this.
