Rear halfshaft

Went to check my rear end fluid an found that the rear lower control arm was covered with grease. Does this indicate that the cv joint is bad. I did not see a problem with the boot. Maybe I need to look closer. If all the grease has leaked out of the joint does it need to be replaced? If it needs to be replaced where is the best place to get them? The shop manual doen't make the job sseem to bad, any suggestions?

Is that the drivers side or the pass side, auto or standard? I ask b/c if its the pass side on a stanard, you're out of luck, no one makes the fat shaft any more. Most don't sell the repair kit either, they just sell a replacement shaft that fits both sides. The cost of a repair kit plus labor and a new shaft is within a few dollars so they don't bother with the kit any more. I found this out when one of mine threw grease from under the boot, which wasn't torn. If you can get a new metal retainer, you may be able to repack it with grease and install the new retainer. Good luck
