Rear Main Seal Install?

What is the proper method for installing a new rear main seal in our engines? Do you need a special tool or can you get away with carefully tapping it into place?

Yes, just tap it in with something about the same size, so it goes in evenly. A piece of pipe or wood. I used a big cork plug from a cookie jar to tap it in. Also, check to see if there are any grooves worn on the crankshaft. If so, you will need a sleeve repair kit from Felpro 16250.

Thanks for the information. Answered my question and gave me a reason to go buy a big jar of cookies too.

Actually...

Actually there is a tool for the proper installation that puts it flush with the crank if I remember right.

Short of calling my friendly Snap-on or Ford Dealer where would I locate the right tool?

Try ebay or some autoparts stores.

What I used was the old removed seal. Flip it over so it is back to back with the new seal, and tap away.

I was thinking the same thing. Seems like a simple solution but not much room for error. And with me that seems to be a issue.....

I still like the cookie jar lid idea

Thanks
