View Full Version : Anyone interested in custom carbonfibre hoods for our SC's?

As some of you may know, I'm currently looking to replace my damaged original hood.
I have looked at buying used, and new from Ford. I have called a couple of aftermarket hood suppliers (Cervini's, Design Concepts).
I have come to the conclusion that we Canadian SC'ers are really at a disadvantage as compared to our brethren south of the border!!!
I'm working on a contact who is located in Barrie, Ontario. This guy is supposedly an aeronautical engineer who likes to make custom body panels and interior parts on the side. So far, his products have been more geared towards the huge market for the Honda Civics and such. I'm trying to contact him to ask for a ballpark price on custom parts for the SC's. I expect he'll not want to do 'one offs', but may need to have at least a half dozen committed buyers before he'll produce the molds and make the parts.
I'm not too familiar with the process, but I suspect a mold created for carbon-fiber parts should also work for fiberglass parts. That being the case, I'm interested in having him make me a custom hood for my '90 SC in fiberglass.
In the event he's willing to do the work for a reasonable price, are any of you interested???
Regards,
Sean

I would be VERY interested in getting a new hood, because paying an equal amount for shipping as the hood is just ridiculous!!! If it is possible however, see if they can be made so we could still use the hydro lifts(instead of the damn prop). What style did you have in mind???

Luke,
I would only do this if we can still make use of the stock hydraulic lifts. No way would I want to see an ugly prop under my hood.
I was thinking I'd like the Mach 1 style of hood, but if we're going custom, there may be other options. I'm open to suggestions.
...personally, I'm not keen on the cowl induction style hoods. I think they look great on a drag car, but for a street car, I prefer something more akin to the Mach 1 style, or perhaps a custom newer Cobra style raised hood.
The only problem here is that this guy will probably only build them for us if we can get at least six guys to agree on a single style. Then, there will be six of us all within the SCCoO driving around with these same hoods on our cars. I'd love to be able to drive around with a one-of-a-kind hood, but the costs are even worse than if I order the Cervini's hood from the States.
Anyone else interested???
Cheers,
Sean

Paul,
Thanks for the contact information. Do they make anything other than the stock-style hood?
What is their pricing like?
...I'll try to reach them on the phone.
Cheers,
Sean
Sean, I forgot they have a website... (doh!)
www.canadiancustomfibergl...tbird.html (http://www.canadiancustomfiberglass.com/tbird.html)
I'm not sure just what they have, but it looks like a small(ish) company. They may be able to make some modifications to suit your needs. I've been meaning to take a cruise down there and talk to them in person, just haven't got around to it yet ;)

What about a hood kind of like Ted Lyons? His cowl with turbo coupe inserts? I always like that kind of style.
I might be in on this if I could get the money, depending on how much it is though

Paul,
I emailed Dave at Canadian Custom Fiberglass today.
Les,
I introduced the idea to Dave about making parts for the XR7's also.
Tazer999,
I'm sorry, but you don't have your name in your Sig, so I've referred to you by your User Name. Have you got any pics showing Ted's hood? It sounds interesting.
All,
Canadian Custom Fiberglass does anything you want (thus the 'Custom' in their name). The only question is will they do it at costs that aren't prohibitive. I suggested to Dave that his company may benefit from the American market as well. With the canadian dollar being so weak as compared to the american dollar, there should be some room for him to snag a bunch of US customers. All the things that work against us buying from the US won't be nearly as bad for them buying from a canadian company.
I'll keep you informed if/when I hear back from Dave.
Happy New Years!!!
Cheers,
Sean

Sean: My name is Ryan, nice to meet you, :)
Anyways, as for his hood. Here are some good pictures of it showing the curves etc. I would not want one just like his because he custom made it himself and would not want to copy him
I would just want some kind of spinoff. Maybe a smaller cowl, different scoops, etc

Here are some other interesting hoods I have found

I personally like this hood, but only if it had one tier to the cowl

Sean, I would definately be interested. I would be looking for something a little more attractive than stock, so see what you can do. (I like all the pics Tazer showed except the white cowl...little too big for me)

All,
I'm sorry I haven't been keeping up with these posts. I have been out of town on business, and will probably be gone again for the next couple of weeks. I'll try to keep an eye on this BBS while I'm on the road, but I'm not sure what sort of access I'll have.
I have been in contact with Dave at Canadian Custom Fiberglass, and he sounds enthusiastic about doing business with all of us! At this point, I'm thinking we really don't want for Dave to get the idea that I'm just one guy interested in making a purchase with his company, and so it might be a good idea if each of you drops him a line just to say that you're all members of the SCCoO and/or SCCoA, and that you're very interested in fiberglass parts for your SC's and XR7's. Simply go to the Canadian Custom Fiberglass web site at www.canadiancustomfiberglass.com (http://www.canadiancustomfiberglass.com) and follow the 'Contact Us' link.
In an effort to make Dave aware of the following here, I'll send him the link to this topic on the BBS.
In the event some of you are located great distances from Canadian Custom Fiberglass, we may be able to work something out where I pick up the parts and then distribute them to you either at club meets, or perhaps from my home. We'll have to work out the logistics in terms of payments, etc.
If you guys have pics of the hoods, fenders, trunklids, etc. that you might be interested in, I suggest you post them here so that Dave can view them using the link I'll send him. Alternatively, email them to me or directly to him.
Please take a few minutes to tell Dave how strong your interests are for a local supplier of these sorts of things. If we can negotiate reasonable pricing, I think this should serve as a great alternative to having to purchase things from Cervini's, Design Concepts, etc. from the U.S. (and having to pay duty, exchange, etc.).
Keep in touch!
Cheers,
Sean

Hi gang!
I've been away on business, so it's been difficult to make any headway with Dave at CCF as of late. Also, I have not heard back from Ian up in Barrie.
This past week, I had some rather enthusiastic correspondence with Dave at CCF. His company would really like to grab as much market share as possible. He has asked me to pull together as many interested members of the SCCoO and/or SCCoA as possible who are looking to replace their hoods with aftermarket fiberglass pieces. He'll try to cut us the best possible deal. The idea is that we need to get a sampling of styles of hoods made and installed so that our cars can become a source of advertisement for CCF's products. Personally, I like the same style of hood that Cervini's makes. I'm sure some of you have other ideas in mind. Dave is willing to cut a lot off what the normal 'one off' price would be, as long as the design isn't so outragious that it would make a hard-to-market product. Dave has invited me to work with him to coordinate the sale, construction and installation of these pieces on our cars. Dave sounds interested in addressing the needs/desires of those of us who are driving the Cougar XR7's, something that no one else is doing at present (to the best of our knowledge).
The key here, is that we pool together all of those who are interested so that we can get this thing off the ground. Dave agreed with me wholeheartedly that the entire market is overpriced at present, especially in consideration of the fact that most if not all of us have no other option than to buy from the U.S. and pay for exchange, duty and shipping. I really need for you guys to let me know just how interested you are. Tell me which particular style of hood you would want to have made.
I think this is a rather unique opportunity for us, seeing as how a completely custom hood would normally cost so much that few of us could afford to acquire one. At this point, we'll need to start looking at specific designs before Dave can set pricing.
Also, for those of you who have considered swapping the '96/'97 style front ends onto your cars, you can see on CCF's web site that they offer the body kits made for these years. I'm sure we could work something out with Dave to be able to purchase the front skirt only.
Let's not let this opportunity slip away!
I'll look forward to hearing from you soon.
Best regards,
Sean

Before I get any further with Dave at CCF, I need to know what sampling of different hood styles we're looking at constructing.
Would each of you please post which style of hood you're interested in obtaining? The better the variety, the better the chances Dave will see us as an attractive means of advertising these products
I'm partial to the Cervini's-like Mach 1 style of hood, but some of you may be interested in something a little more original. That's OK too!

To be honest I have long been wanting the cowl hood designed for the later style T-Birds, the one with smother lines and less height to the raised portion. They can be found on the SCCOA site under Manufactured Parts and is made my American Sportscar Design for 94-95 Thunderbirds.
Cost per unit American Dollars = $449.00

All,
Admittedly, I have been remiss about following up with Dave at CCF for the past couple of weeks. I apologize for this, and hope you can understand that during this time I have had an extremely busy schedule (my head gaskets blew, and I'm part-way through the repair, and work is nuts... I'm out of town on business most of the time!).
This morning I eMailed Dave asking him yet again to contact me so that we can discuss the necessary arrangements to facilitate our members doing business with his company. I hope to hear back from him soon.
I'll let you all know what's going on as things develop.
In the interrim, if some of you are anxious to obtain the hoods, spoilers, etc. that you need, I invite you to do some research into companies that you may know of who do this sort of thing. It would probably be in our collective best interests to have an alternative or two in the event that CCF decides they're not interested in our business.
On my part, as soon as I get back to the office, I'll send out another message to the guy up in Barrie who works with fiberglass and carbonfiber to see if he replies this time.
Again, I'm sorry for how long it has been taking to make things happen here.
Sincerely,
Sean

...even later news!
I got a response from Dave this afternoon, and he seemed a little upset at my suggestion CCF wasn't paying us much attention. First, he indicated that they had been enduring some aggravating network problems lately, and suggested messages may have been lost in the process... but anyway...
He did tell me that he has received some other correspondence from club members besides myself, which is good to hear. However, he told me that he expected to receive a hood from someone that he could use to take impressions so they can create the necessary moulds, but that he has yet to receive the hood. ...I know I didn't agree to send him mine (at least not yet), so whoever this person is, would you please contact Dave and let him know if and when you'll be delivering your hood?
Dave reiterated that CCF is very interested in our business. I suggested that he and I meet, to give me an opportunity to check out their facilities. This would put me in a better position in so far as vouching whether CCF does quality work, etc. ...as many of you have asked. Also, I mentioned that my hood is off my car right now (as is the top half of the engine :( ), and that maybe he could use my stock SC hood to take impressions. Hopefully he and I can make arrangements to get together some time in the next week or so.
If there are any other developments, I'll let you guys know.
...soldiering on!
Cheers,
Sean

That would have been me that talked about offering my hood but I did not say that to CCF Dave, my thought was in maybe drive down and let him take measurements not take off my hood and leave it with him. I guess I should have kept my mouth shut.

This is not a problem. ...just a little misunderstanding, that's all!
If I win a lottery by this weekend, I'll call Dave and his buddy at Chips Away and arrange to drop my hood off so they can take impressions.
Basically, Dave tells me it'll cost me $399 for the hood, plus an extra $78 for the mould work (one time cost that I'll have to eat since I'm the first). If I do this (a big "IF" right now, since I have parts to pay for that I need for the HG repair), then I'll most likely go with a hood similar in style to the Cervini's Mach 1 hood. Anyone else interested right now? Maybe we could split the $78 for the mould work.
Regards,
Sean

This is deja-vu for me,I just got back home from talking to a friend of mine and he is making custom carbon fibre parts.I was asked if anyone would be interested in such a product.I thought that it was a new post and you knew the same guy( what a small world that would be ).He is going to get back to me on the specifics but the hoods would be carbon fibre probably re-inforced with kevlar for strength.
As soon as i find out more info i will start a new post but the first thing to do is find out if anyone is serious about this and if so what design would be chosen.Lets hear the choices.

Cool! That's interesting, Stephen.
I've got my hands full right now with the new motor and the costs involved in that project. However, down the road I'd really like to swap on a CF hood. I may need a little more hood clearance in the future, so the design would be key.
Please keep us in the loop!
